Expectations Dictating Muscle Movement

Doh. I can hear it ringing in my ears as I absentmindedly slide my finger up to the C, and somehow, buried in my subconscious, I am playing through the piece in my mind before my fingers even act.

Why is it that an auditory stimulus can place such a powerful effect on muscle movement?

When a musician hears a note before he or she attempts to play it, reaching that note becomes so much easier.
This is one of the questions I will be attempting to resolve this summer.
